Development of the card cases

Vicky • Apr. 25, 2019

Originally I had the idea for small card cases already last year, because there were always moments when I didn't want to take an extra bag or big wallet with me, but still had to carry my driving licence, identity card, debit card & Co. But since I didn't have the right idea at that time how to do it all, this topic has retreated into the background for the time being.

At the end of January I worked on different prototypes and created this model.
In February, when I was about to start production, my father had the idea to build a protection into the case so that the data on the cards could not be spied out.

After some research I came across Cryptalloy® who developed a foil especially for this purpose. This is TÜV certified and provides maximum RFID/NFC protection for all relevant frequencies worldwide.

After I had decided to incorporate this foil into my card cases, the first step was to create a prototype with Cryptalloy® foil and send it to the Kryptronic Technologies laboratory in Munich to check that the foil is in the right places and that the protective effect is guaranteed. When this was confirmed, I had to send in two more cases to get the official certification.

I received the certificate in mid-March and was then able to start production.

Now you can find out how it all went in detail:
February 2019: 1st prototype

After deciding in early February to equip all card cases with RFID protection, I started to experiment with the best way to incorporate the Cryptalloy® foil into the case. ⠀
In the picture you can see the first prototype I sent to the lab to test the protection. That was a very exciting moment. Although I had already made a sketch to check that I was putting the foil in the right places, I could only be 100% sure after testing it in the laboratory.

End of February / middle of March 2019: Confirmed protective effect & creation of further models

After receiving positive news from the laboratory that my prototype passed the test, I made two more identical models, this time using two materials that I later used for the final products. Although the type of material is not crucial for the RFID protection, as it is only the Cryptalloy® foil that is responsible for this, I simply had the official confirmation that the whole thing also works with different types of leatherette.

After a few weeks the laboratory informed me that both cases also offer maximum protection, so I received an official certificate for this card case model.

After I received the certificate for the confirmed RFID protection of the card cases, I was ready to start producing. ⠀
Here you can see some of the leatherette I used for it. During my research for suitable materials I also found some very interesting types of leatherette with a textured surface. How they make themselves as a case, you can see

When this picture was taken, I was just about to draw the pattern for the lining and then cut it to size:

After the lining cuttings were finished, the leatherette pieces were cut to size

This is what the intermediate state looked like when all leatherette & lining parts were cut

The Filucry® labels were then sewn on and the elastic bands were cut:

Here you can see the Cryptalloy foil that is incorporated into each case. It prevents spying out the data on your cards.
